UMSL Baseball Coaching Staff
Jim Brady is entering his 23rd season as head coach at UMSL and going into the 2008 season, he looks to continue the success the program has had throughout his coaching tenure. Brady has a career record of 618-403-5, the most wins for any head coach in any sport in UMSL athletics. Entering the 2007 season, he ranked in the top 20 among NCAA Division II coaches for most career wins with 618, and is 31st among Division II coaches in career winning percentage at .612. Early in the 2003 season, he recorded career
victory number 500 with an 11-4 victory over the University of Central
Missouri, and last year recorded his 600th career win with a victory
over Saint Rose (NY). Brady became the 47th coach in NCAA Division II
history to reach the 600-win milestone, and was the 29th active Division
II coach to reach 500 wins. His longevity and stability in the program
has been a key ingredient to the success the UMSL program has shown
under the tutelage of Brady.
Prior to being named the head coach, he assumed the pitching coach duties at UM-St. Louis in 1984 under former head coach Jim Dix. That year, Brady guided UMSL to a league-leading ERA as a team. Before arriving at UMSL, Brady served as a teacher and assistant baseball and football coach at Parkway South High School for five years. He has also served as an assistant coach at Missouri State and helped guide the Bears to back-to-back post-season appearances in 1977 and 1978. Brady
played collegiate baseball at nearby Meramec Community College, and
later went on to play at Division I Missouri State University in Springfield,
Mo. Brady has two sons, Kyle (20) who attends Washington University
in St. Louis, and Tyler (19), who attends Miami University (Ohio). His
grandfather, the late William C. Brady, is a member of the St. Louis
Soccer Hall of Fame.
Joe Goodmann is currently in his third season as the assistant baseball coach at the University of Missouri-St. Louis where he handles the pitching staff. He has had previous coaching stops for the independent Springfield/Ozark Mountain Ducks, LaGrange College (LaGrange, Ga.) and at his alma mater, St. Mary’s University (San Antonio, Texas), where he was a volunteer coach for the 2001 NCAA Division II National Champions. As a player, Goodmann finished up his seventh season of professional independent baseball this past summer for the Coastal Bend Aviators of the new American Association of Independent Professional Baseball. For the Aviators, Goodmann assumed the closer role and posted a 0-0 record with a 1.31 ERA and 6 saves. His professional career highlight came in 2004 where he helped the Edinburg (Texas) Roadrunners to the Central Baseball League championship and posted a 5-3 record with a 1.17 ERA. His professional career ERA is a 2.80 and he has averaged more than one strikeout per inning. Goodmann graduated from St. Mary's University (Texas) with a degree in exercise and sports science with a teaching certification. He earned a masters degree in sports management from the University of Texas. He currently resides in St. Louis, MO, with his wife Julie.
Logan Hughes is in his first season as an assistant coach at UMSL. Hughes will work with hitting and fielding instruction for the team, along with various other roles associated with the program. Hughes played two seasons at UMSL, and put together an impressive list of accomplishments and honors during his career. In 2003, he helped lead the team to the 2003 NCAA Regionals and was named the GLVC Baseball Scholar Athlete of the Year. In 2004, he again was named GLVC Scholar Athlete of the Year as well as the recipient of the prestigious GLVC Paragon Award. He was a second team all-conference and all-region selection on the field, and earned academic all-district and academic all-conference honors as well. Hughes entered the UMSL record books in many catagories depsite playing just two seasons. He tied the single season record for most games played with 54 in the 2003 season, and is ninth in the records for most hits in the season. The single season record for most RBI in a year is 56, which was accomplished three times in UMSL history, with Hughes reaching that mark two of those three times.
