Missouri-St. Louis Head Coach
Chris Pilz is entering his fifth season at the head of the
men’s basketball program and is continuing to work on bringing
it back to the prominence it once held during his playing
career. His up-tempo style has brought excitement back to
the Mark Twain Building during his first four years. Now
he is looking to continue the program’s development and
re-establish the Tritons as a team on the rise in the always
competitive Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Pilz understands that this building process takes time,
but it’s a road both his players and coaches are fully committed
to seeing through to the end.
Last
year, UMSL finished with a 9-18 record and Pilz saw
senior Brett Ledbetter earn all-conference honors
under his guidance. Senior Troy Slaten also set a
single-season school record with 72 three-pointers.
In 2005-06, Pilz led the Tritons to their first winning
season in five years with a record of 14-13, narrowly
missing out on a bid to the GLVC Tournament. Senior
Jonathan Griffin earned second team all-conference
accolades and finished his career as the school’s
second leading scoring. |

During the 2004-05 season,
Pilz led the team to a bid to the GLVC Tournament after
a 9-19 season that included a team with his first group
of recruits. In his first season at UMSL, the Tritons finished
with a 9-18 overall record, falling two games short of a
bid to the GLVC Tournament.
Pilz came to UMSL having built
a successful program at Hazelwood Central (Mo.) High School.
In his six seasons at Hazelwood Central, Pilz led the team
to a 107-55 record and never finished with a losing season.
In 2001-02, Pilz led the team to the Elite Eight, going
23-6 on the year. In 1999, he guided the team to a Sweet
16 appearance in the state tournament. Prior to coaching
at Hazelwood Central, Pilz was the head coach at Senath-Hornersville
(Mo.) High School where he went 32-18 in two seasons. His
coaching career began at Salem (Mo.) High School where he
went 45-35 in four seasons.
As a player at UMSL, Pilz was one of the greatest to ever
wear the red and gold uniform. A second team All-American
selection in 1990-91, he holds the distinction of having
played in more winning games – 72 – than any other men’s
basketball player in school history. He was a member of
the 1987-88 and the 1990-91 teams that both set the school
record with 22 wins in a season. Pilz was also a member
of the last UMSL team to qualify for the NCAA Division II
Tournament during the 1987-88 season.
Pilz is the third all-time leading scorer in UMSL history
with 1,673 points. He ranks first in school history in career
steals (233) and is second in career assists (426). He was
named to the MIAA All-Freshman team in 1987-88 and was conference
Newcomer of the Year that same season. Pilz was named an
all-conference selection three times and was a two-time
all-region selection. In 2002, he was inducted into the
UMSL Sports Hall of Fame.
Chris Pilz knows the true meaning of the phrase “there’s
no place like home” after being named the UMSL men’s basketball
head coach on August 18, 2003. He returned to the very gym
where he once torched opponents on the hardwood, and now
looks to add some fire to the program that he once represented
as an All-American.
“I was very fortunate to get the opportunity to play here
at UMSL,” he added. “I played on some great teams at UMSL
and developed some great friendships with teammates. It
was that excitement and love for the game that inspired
me to become a head coach. It’s always been a goal of mine
to be able to coach at the collegiate level and to have
that opportunity here at UMSL is exciting.”
Pilz graduated from UMSL with a bachelor of science in secondary
education in 1991, and went on to complete his master’s
in educational administration from Lincoln University in
1995. He is a graduate of Obion County Central High School
in Troy, Tenn., and resides in St. Louis, Mo., with his
wife Angela, and their four children; Cameron (15), Ashton
(9), Addison (7) and Aldon (5).
