Dan
King is entering his seventh season in 2007 as head coach for the UMSL
men's soccer program and is the fourth head coach in the storied history
of the Rivermen soccer program.
| Last
year, King led the team to a 9-7-2 record, the most wins for the
team since the 2002 season and matched his best record since coming
to UMSL. King took over an inherited team in 2001 season, but made
a huge turnaround in his second year. In the 2002 season, the Rivermen
finished second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, the team's
highest finish since joining the GLVC. For his efforts, King was
named GLVC Coach of the Year after guiding UMSL to a 9-7-2 overall
record. King again led the Rivermen a bid in the GLVC Tournament
the following year in 2003. |

Prior
to coming to UMSL, King served as the head coach at Florissant Valley
Community College, a position he held since the 1998 season. He has
also served as the director of coaching for the local Cougar Soccer
Club since 1992. His coaching career began at his alma mater, Indiana
University, when he served as an assistant for legendary head coach
Jerry Yeagley from 1984-1986. While with the Hoosiers staff, he was
the defensive coordinator and assisted in the recruiting of players
from the St. Louis area. King still spends time as a coordinator and
coach at the Indiana University Soccer Camps. He graduated from IU with
a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education.
"This
is something I've been building towards for my coaching career, and
that is to coach at a four-year institution. I am looking forward to
the opportunity to compete at one of the highest levels," said
head coach Dan King. "St. Louis has a very strong soccer base and
soccer tradition and I am looking forward to expanding on that here
at UMSL."
King
was a collegiate student-athlete at Indiana University from 1981-84
where he played for Coach Yeagley. While with the Hoosiers, he helped
the team advance to the national championship game each of his four
years. King was a member of the back-to-back national championship teams
in 1982 and 1983, the first two of the five national titles in the school's
history. In addition, the team finished runner-ups in the national title
game in both 1981 and 1984. During that time period, the Hoosiers set
an NCAA record that still stands with a 46-game unbeaten streak from
1983 through 1984. In the 1983 season, King earned Big Ten MVP honors,
and in high school he was a Parade High School All-American in 1979
and a member of the Junior National Soccer Team in 1978.
King
and his wife, Rhea, have two daughters and live in Florissant where
King serves as an Alderman.
